Hey, I can relate to basically everything you said, Autumn. The wife and I have a large collection (her's is around 650-700 cd's and mine is well over 1,700 cd's) yet I tend to not listen to varieties...I get stuck on artists a lot. I'll put songs on my MP3 player and listen to those and on my ITunes, but say...for the last three weeks or so, I've had nothing but Kristin Hersh in my car...not that Kristin can make a bad album. Before that, it was Lily Allen. (I know, I get shit for liking her...but I find her cheeky and hilarious.) And yes, I agree...it is cool to see what others have floating around their players. I think I'm going to start doing this...

kb, good question... i never post the "rules" and i probably should. the idea is you put your player on shuffle and list the 1st ten that come out, without skipping, without omitting those embarrassing albums/tracks that you sold on half.com (*after* you ripped them to your computer, of course).

i do it b/c my husband & i have a pretty big music collection (fueled mostly by him), but i usually end up in these k-holes where i just listen to the same comfortable band (and usually album) over and over and over again. the FRT inevitably reminds me of something i haven't listened to for a while (i gave Quarry a second listen today... then fell into a Mozzer k-hole) or introduces me to something I never paid much attention to.

plus, you get to see what everyone else has on their ipods... and the voyeur in me just loves that!

Hey Autumn, how do you come up with your Random 10? Do you set your player on shuffle or something, or is it just what you're listening to at the time? I'm just curious because I like the idea of it.

Yes, I would agree with your assessment that much of 'Quarry' is more literal, but I think that's what I like about that record, as well as 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors'. I feel like Morrissey's writing has become more "human" as he's gotten older - if that makes any sense. In the past, he seemed to deal with issues of desire or passion in a very distant way, but quite a few of the songs on 'Tormentors' directly address the topic of sex. Perhaps his writing has become less metaphorical, but I think it's good that Moz seems to be getting some action!

And I think the production on the last two records sounds better than anything he's done since his Smiths days. I really like the crispness of the recordings.

oh yes, the dead milkmen are among my all-time favorite bands. and the wee impish joe genaro will always reside in a warm corner of my heart.

as, of course, will Moz... but don't you think he's gotten to be a *tad* over the top in his aging years, even for morrissey?? maybe that's not even it... i dunno... parts of Quarry just feel too literal to me, they don't have the Moz's classic biting symbols & metaphors.

Glad to see you're a Dead Milkmen fan!

But, c'mon. You gotta give 'You Are The Quarry' some love. It was a VERY strong return to form for Moz after years lost in the wilderness. Also, "Come Back To Camden" is probably my favorite song from that album!

#10 is a great track. And although no one will mistake Thom Yorke for Isaac Hayes, I happen to think "A Punchup At A Wedding" is probably the funkiest song Radiohead has ever recorded. I wouldn't be surprised if some babies have been made to that song!
