Yay!: 3, 9
Blech!: 5… You are the Quarry was not the Moz’s finest, by far.
Seen Live: 3 (surprisingly the worst show I’ve ever been to), 7, 5/9
Swooniest: Morrissey, of course (second week in a row!) But let’s be clear, I’m talkin Bona Drag Moz, not You are the Quarry Moz… Sure, he’s still pretty swoony, in a lounge-singer, I’m-losing-my-balance-swinging-this-mic-cord-around sort of way.
Just because they’re not on the list doesn’t mean I won’t make a pitch:
The Roadside Graves, a most excellent alt-country band based outta our beloved neighbor state of refineries and big hair (what could be more alt than that?) released a new album this week, No One Will Ever Know Where You’ve Been (from Kill Buffalo Records). Seriously, the album is great. I was lucky enough to get a pre-release copy a while ago, and I love it. I’m gonna write a genuine review in a few days, when my new copy arrives, complete with liner notes and what not. But in the mean time, you can listen to their stuff here, here, and here. Do it. Go now. What are you waiting for?
Oh, hold on a sec… fellow speakers of this silly slang:
Andrea (apparently, it’s a mozzer kind of week in FRT land)
Ben (that’s my kinda Jesus)
Brian (where jellyfish go, to get away from mormons & drunk Eskimos)
Howard (I *heart* toad the sprocket, a lot)
Lauren (“there’s even a full rapsheet included”…oh, young Carlton…)
Marisa (don’t know many of the songs, but am intrigued by the titles)
Rachel (making her Random Friday debut)
Okay, go now.

Glad to see you’re a Dead Milkmen fan!
But, c’mon. You gotta give ‘You Are The Quarry’ some love. It was a VERY strong return to form for Moz after years lost in the wilderness. Also, “Come Back To Camden” is probably my favorite song from that album!
#10 is a great track. And although no one will mistake Thom Yorke for Isaac Hayes, I happen to think “A Punchup At A Wedding” is probably the funkiest song Radiohead has ever recorded. I wouldn’t be surprised if some babies have been made to that song!
oh yes, the dead milkmen are among my all-time favorite bands. and the wee impish joe genaro will always reside in a warm corner of my heart.
as, of course, will Moz… but don’t you think he’s gotten to be a *tad* over the top in his aging years, even for morrissey?? maybe that’s not even it… i dunno… parts of Quarry just feel too literal to me, they don’t have the Moz’s classic biting symbols & metaphors.
Yes, I would agree with your assessment that much of ‘Quarry’ is more literal, but I think that’s what I like about that record, as well as ‘Ringleader Of The Tormentors’. I feel like Morrissey’s writing has become more “human” as he’s gotten older – if that makes any sense. In the past, he seemed to deal with issues of desire or passion in a very distant way, but quite a few of the songs on ‘Tormentors’ directly address the topic of sex. Perhaps his writing has become less metaphorical, but I think it’s good that Moz seems to be getting some action!
And I think the production on the last two records sounds better than anything he’s done since his Smiths days. I really like the crispness of the recordings.
Hey Autumn, how do you come up with your Random 10? Do you set your player on shuffle or something, or is it just what you’re listening to at the time? I’m just curious because I like the idea of it.
kb, good question… i never post the “rules” and i probably should. the idea is you put your player on shuffle and list the 1st ten that come out, without skipping, without omitting those embarrassing albums/tracks that you sold on half.com (*after* you ripped them to your computer, of course).
i do it b/c my husband & i have a pretty big music collection (fueled mostly by him), but i usually end up in these k-holes where i just listen to the same comfortable band (and usually album) over and over and over again. the FRT inevitably reminds me of something i haven’t listened to for a while (i gave Quarry a second listen today… then fell into a Mozzer k-hole) or introduces me to something I never paid much attention to.
plus, you get to see what everyone else has on their ipods… and the voyeur in me just loves that!
Hey, I can relate to basically everything you said, Autumn. The wife and I have a large collection (her’s is around 650-700 cd’s and mine is well over 1,700 cd’s) yet I tend to not listen to varieties…I get stuck on artists a lot. I’ll put songs on my MP3 player and listen to those and on my ITunes, but say…for the last three weeks or so, I’ve had nothing but Kristin Hersh in my car…not that Kristin can make a bad album. Before that, it was Lily Allen. (I know, I get shit for liking her…but I find her cheeky and hilarious.) And yes, I agree…it is cool to see what others have floating around their players. I think I’m going to start doing this…
